Quick answer

Is a Personal Return Part of Running a Business?

For many business owners, it is. A sole proprietor or single-member LLC reports business income on the owner’s Form 1040, and partners and S corporation shareholders report their share of business income on theirs. Your business return and your personal return are separate filings, but they are connected.

  • Sole proprietors
  • Partners and shareholders
  • Owners outside the U.S.

How it works

Your Personal Return in Four Steps

From documents to a filed return.

Every tax year

Schedule C: Business Income You Own

Used with Form 1040 by many sole proprietors and single-member LLC owners:

  • Business income
  • Business expenses
  • Self-employment tax
  • Equipment and mileage records

Business income and expenses are reported on Schedule C, attached to your Form 1040.

Schedule E: Pass-Through Income

Used with Form 1040 for income passed through from other entities:

  • Partnership income (K-1)
  • S corporation income (K-1)
  • Rental income
  • Royalty income

Which schedules apply depends on your situation. We confirm them with you first.

State returns

Your State May Want a Return Too

State filing depends on where you live and where you earn income.

  • Your home state
  • Other states where you earned income
  • State deadlines that can differ

More Time to File, Not to Pay

Individuals can generally request an automatic extension with Form 4868, which gives more time to file but not more time to pay. Tax due is still payable by the original due date.

Estimated Tax During the Year

Owners who do not have enough tax withheld may need to make estimated tax payments during the year. We can help you see whether that applies to you.

International and ITIN

Outside the U.S. or Without an SSN?

An ITIN is a tax ID for people who need one for U.S. tax purposes but are not eligible for an SSN. Your filing depends on your residency and ownership, so start with our International Founders guide.

FAQ

Personal Tax Return Filing Frequently Asked Questions

View All FAQs
Is my personal tax return separate from my business return?

Yes. A business return and an individual return are separate filings, but the two are connected. For a pass-through business, the business’s results are generally reported on the owner’s individual return.

Where does my LLC’s income go on my personal return?

It depends on how the LLC is taxed. A single-member LLC owned by an individual generally reports on the owner’s return, often on Schedule C. A multi-member LLC taxed as a partnership generally gives each member a Schedule K-1, which is reported on the member’s return.

When is my personal return due?

For most individuals on a calendar year, the return is generally due April 15, or the next business day if that date falls on a weekend or legal holiday. State deadlines can differ.

Can I get an extension?

Individuals can generally request an automatic extension by filing Form 4868 by the original due date. It gives more time to file, not more time to pay.

Do I need a state return too?

Possibly. State requirements depend on where you live, where you earned income and the type of income. Some people file in more than one state.

I don’t have an SSN. Can I still file?

It depends on your situation. An ITIN is a tax ID number for people who need one for U.S. tax purposes but are not eligible for an SSN. Your residency and income decide which forms apply, so tell us what applies and we’ll point you to the right path.

Does a business tax return include my personal return?

No. Business tax return preparation and personal return preparation are separate services, with different forms and deadlines.

How much does personal tax return preparation cost?

It depends on the forms and schedules you need and the number of state returns. Your price is shown to you before you start.
