What Has to Change When My Name or Address Changes?

A business name or address change can affect state filings, registered agent information, tax accounts, licenses, banks and vendors. We turn it into a checklist, so nothing is missed.

How it works

Updating Your Details in Four Steps

State first, then everyone who relies on it.

Start with the state

A New Company Name

A name change usually starts with the state:

  • Check the new name is available
  • Amend the state record
  • Update the registered agent record
  • Update licenses, bank and contracts

A new name has to be available in your state before it can be filed.

A New Address

An address change has more than one address to think about:

  • Principal office address
  • Mailing address
  • IRS address, with Form 8822-B
  • Registered office stays with your agent

Changing your business address does not change your registered agent's address.

Where to update

Places That May Need the New Details

Not every place applies to every company. We check which ones do.

  • State filing office
  • Registered agent
  • IRS
  • State tax accounts
  • Licenses and permits
  • Bank accounts
  • Insurance and vendors
  • Website and invoices

Name or Address Changes and Your EIN

Generally, a name or address change alone does not require a new EIN. The IRS still needs to hear about the change, and a change of responsible party is reported on Form 8822-B within 60 days.

Moving to Another State?

A new business address in another state is not the same as changing the state where the company was formed. Doing business there can mean registering in that state. See Foreign Qualification.

Registered agent

Your Registered Agent Address Is Separate

The address your registered agent keeps for your company is not your business address. Changing yours does not change your agent's, and changing your agent is its own update.

FAQ

Business Name and Address Change Frequently Asked Questions

View All FAQs
What should I do first when my company name changes?

Check that the new name is available in your state, then update the state record. After that, update the IRS, tax accounts, licenses, your bank and your vendors.

Does a new business address change my registered agent?

No. Your registered agent keeps its own address for your company. A change to your business address does not change it, and changing your agent is a separate update.

Will I get a new EIN if my name or address changes?

Generally, a name or address change alone does not require a new EIN.

Do I have to tell the IRS about a new address?

Yes, the IRS should know where to reach the business. IRS Form 8822-B reports a new mailing address, business location or responsible party, and a change of responsible party must be reported within 60 days.

How long does a name or address change take?

It depends on the state filing office and the method. Some states offer expedited processing for an additional government fee.

How much does it cost?

The price has two parts: our service fee and any state filing fee, which varies by state. We show you both before you pay.
